Blue baseball cap before and after cleaning with Cap Sauce

To get the smell out of a hat, clean the sweatband first, then let the whole hat dry completely before you deodorize it. The smell lives in the sweat, oil and bacteria soaked into the band, so covering it up with spray alone won’t last.

Once the band is clean and bone dry, a sprinkle of baking soda or a fabric deodorizer takes care of whatever’s left. If your hat smells like sweat, this is the order that actually works.

The quick answer

  1. Flip the hat over and find the sweatband. That’s the source.
  2. Scrub the band with a mild cleaner and a soft brush.
  3. Wipe the suds off with a damp cloth.
  4. Air dry the hat completely on a form, with good airflow. Usually 6 to 12 hours.
  5. For leftover odor, sprinkle baking soda inside the crown overnight, then shake and brush it out.
  6. Finish with a light mist of fabric deodorizer inside the band.

Why hats get smelly

Your forehead sweats, and the sweatband catches it. Sweat itself doesn’t smell much. The funk comes from bacteria feeding on sweat, skin oil and sunscreen that build up in the band over weeks of wear.

That’s why a smelly hat doesn’t smell everywhere. Sniff the outside of the crown and it’s usually fine. Sniff the inside of the band and you’ll find the problem. It also explains why spraying air freshener on top only works for about a day. The food source is still there.

Damp makes it worse. A hat that goes straight from a sweaty workout into a gym bag or a hot car gives bacteria exactly what they want.

What you’ll need

How to deodorize a hat, step by step

Step 1: Clean the sweatband

Turn the hat upside down so the band faces you. Put a little cleaner on your brush and scrub along the whole band, front to back, in short strokes. Spend most of your time on the front of the band, since that’s where your forehead sweats the most.

You can scrub the band harder than the outside of the hat. Most bands are cotton or polyester terry and hold up fine. If you see yellow or white lines, our guide on getting sweat stains out of a hat goes deeper on those.

Step 2: Clean the inside of the crown

Sweat creeps up past the band into the inside panels. Give them a lighter pass with the brush, especially near the front. Skip this on wool or delicate hats and just do the band.

Step 3: Wipe it out

Use a damp cloth to wipe away the cleaner. Leftover soap can trap dirt and hold onto smells, so wipe until the cloth comes away clean. Don’t rinse the whole hat under the tap.

Step 4: Dry it all the way

This is the step people rush, and it’s the one that matters most. Set the hat on a rolled towel or ball, upside down if the band needs extra air, somewhere with a breeze or a fan. Keep it out of direct sun and away from heaters.

Give it 6 to 12 hours. A hat that’s put away even a little damp can come back smelling worse than before. If you can still feel any coolness in the band, it’s not dry yet.

Step 5: Baking soda for stubborn smells

If the hat still smells once it’s dry, sprinkle about a tablespoon of baking soda inside the crown and along the band. Leave it overnight. In the morning, shake it out and brush away the rest with a dry brush.

Baking soda works best on a dry hat. On a damp one, it can clump and leave a white crust, especially on dark fabric. If you’re working with a dark cap, see our tips on cleaning a black hat before you try it.

Step 6: Finish with a deodorizer

Lightly mist a fabric deodorizer onto the sweatband from about six inches away. Don’t drench it. Let it dry for 15 to 30 minutes before you wear the hat.

Smelly hat troubleshooting

It still smells after cleaning

Nine times out of ten, the band wasn’t fully cleaned or the hat wasn’t fully dried. Do a second round on the band and give it a longer dry with a fan on it.

It smells musty, not sweaty

That’s dampness, usually from storing the hat wet or in a closed bag. Clean the band, dry it fully, and store it somewhere with air. The baking soda step helps a lot here.

It smells like the dishwasher or the washing machine

Detergent residue plus trapped water can leave a sour smell. Wipe the inside with a cloth dampened in plain water to pull out the leftover soap, then dry it well. We explain why the dishwasher isn’t great for hats in this guide.

The smell comes right back after one wear

That usually means the band is saturated deep down. Repeat the full clean, and from then on, wipe the band every week or two.

Don’t do this

How to keep a hat from smelling

The easy way

The Cap Sauce Complete Kit is built for this exact problem. The foam cleaner gets the sweat and oil out of the band without soaking the hat, and the deodorizer spray handles what’s left once it’s dry. The protector spray helps the next round of sweat and dirt stay on the surface so it’s easier to clean.

FAQ

Why does my hat smell like sweat even after washing?

Usually the sweatband wasn’t scrubbed enough or the hat wasn’t completely dry before you put it away. Clean the band again and let it dry for a full 12 hours with good airflow.

Does baking soda get the smell out of a hat?

Yes, it helps absorb leftover odor. Sprinkle it inside a clean, dry hat, leave it overnight, then shake and brush it out. It works best after the band has been cleaned, not instead of it.

Can I use vinegar to deodorize a hat?

Some people wipe the band with a mix of one part white vinegar and three parts cool water. It can help with odor, but test it on a hidden spot first and let the hat air out fully, since the vinegar smell needs time to fade.

How do I get the smell out of a hat without washing it?

For a quick fix, air it out in the shade, sprinkle baking soda inside overnight, and mist the band with a fabric deodorizer. It won’t last as long as cleaning the band, but it buys you time.
