Cap Sauce Foam Cleaner 4 oz and wooden hat brush

Here’s how to clean a snapback hat: brush off the dry dirt, spot clean the panels and sweatband with a mild cleaner on a soft brush, wipe it down with a damp cloth, and let it air dry on something round. Skip the sink soak, the dishwasher and the dryer.

Snapbacks are easier than most hats because the plastic strap doesn’t care about a little water. The parts that need care are the flat brim, the front panels and the stitching around the logo.

The quick answer

  1. Snap the strap closed so the crown holds its shape while you work.
  2. Dry brush the whole hat to knock off dust and loose dirt.
  3. Put a small amount of mild cleaner on a soft brush and scrub the panels in small circles.
  4. Spend extra time on the sweatband inside the front.
  5. Wipe the suds off with a damp microfiber cloth. Don’t rinse it under the tap.
  6. Clean the plastic snap strap with the same damp cloth.
  7. Air dry on a rolled towel or ball for 4 to 6 hours, away from heat and sun.

What you’ll need

Leave the bleach and heavy-duty stain sprays under the sink. They can leave a faded blotch right on the front panel.

How to clean a snapback hat, step by step

Step 1: Close the strap and check the tag

Snap the back closed on its usual setting. That keeps the crown round while you scrub, so you’re not squishing it flat with one hand. While you’re there, look for a care tag inside. If it says spot clean only, that’s exactly what you’re about to do.

Step 2: Dry brush first

Brush the whole hat while it’s dry, top button to brim edge. Go with the direction of the fabric. This lifts dust out of the weave so you’re not turning it into mud in the next step.

Step 3: Spot clean the panels

Put cleaner on the brush, not straight onto the hat. A pea-sized dab of foam or one dip of the brush in soapy water is enough for a panel. Scrub in small circles with light pressure, the kind you’d use to brush your teeth, and work one panel at a time.

Around embroidered logos, slow down. Brush along the stitching rather than across it so the threads don’t fuzz. Puff-print and raised rubber logos only need a gentle wipe.

Step 4: Work on the sweatband

The sweatband on a snapback runs along the front and sides. Flip the hat and scrub the full band with your cleaner, then wipe it clean. If you’re fighting yellow lines or crusty white marks, our guide on getting sweat stains out of a hat has more tricks.

Step 5: Wipe, don’t rinse

Use a damp cloth to lift off the suds. Wring the cloth out well first. Two or three passes usually does it. Running a snapback under the tap soaks the front panels and the buckram stiffener behind them, and that’s how the front goes floppy.

Step 6: Clean the plastic snap strap

This is the part everyone forgets. Sweat and skin oil collect in the little holes on the plastic snap strap, and it gets grimy fast. Scrub the strap and the snap pegs with a toothbrush and a drop of soapy water, then wipe it off. Plastic can handle more water than the rest of the hat, so you can be a little less careful here.

How to clean a snapback with a flat brim

The flat brim is the whole look, so treat it like it matters. Most modern snapbacks have a plastic insert in the brim, which handles a damp cloth fine. Wipe the top and underside with light pressure and keep the cloth moving.

Which method for which snapback

Snapback type Best method Watch out for
Cotton or cotton twill Soft brush and mild cleaner, wipe off Hot water shrinks it
Wool blend Cool water, dab more than scrub Rubbing causes pilling and felting
Polyester Soft brush, can take a little more moisture Heat can warp the brim
Foam-front trucker style Gentle wipe on the front, scrub the mesh Foam cracks if scrubbed hard
Old or vintage Dry brush, minimal moisture, test first Cardboard brims warp when wet

Foam-front snapbacks are really trucker hats, and we have a whole walkthrough on cleaning a trucker hat. If yours is from the ’90s, read how to clean a vintage hat before you get it wet.

Drying your snapback

Put it over a ball or stuff the crown with a rolled towel so the front panels stay upright. Leave the strap snapped. Set it somewhere with airflow, like near an open window or in front of a fan on low.

Most cotton snapbacks dry in 4 to 6 hours. Thicker wool blends can take most of a day. Don’t wear it until the sweatband is completely dry, or it’ll pick up new sweat and smell right away.

No dryer, no hair dryer, no dashboard of a hot car. Heat shrinks the crown and can bend that flat brim for good.

Mistakes to avoid

The easy way

The Cap Sauce Hat Care Kit was made for exactly this kind of job. The foam cleaner works without water, so the front panels and flat brim stay dry, and the soft wood-handle brush gets into seams without fuzzing your embroidery. Test it on a hidden spot first if your snapback is old or delicate.

How often should you clean a snapback?

Wipe the sweatband every couple of weeks if you wear it a lot, especially in summer. Do a full clean when the front starts looking dull or the hat starts to smell. Small, frequent cleans beat one big rescue mission.

FAQ

Can you put a snapback in the washing machine?

Some polyester snapbacks survive a gentle cycle in a cap cage, but it’s a gamble. The spin can bend the flat brim and crush the front panels. Hand washing takes about 10 minutes and is much safer.

How do you clean the plastic strap on a snapback?

Scrub it with a toothbrush and a drop of soapy water, paying attention to the snap holes where grime collects. Wipe it off with a damp cloth and let it air dry with the hat.

Will cleaning a snapback ruin the flat brim?

Not if you keep it damp instead of wet and let it dry flat. Most modern brims have a plastic insert that handles a little moisture. Soaking and heat are what warp brims.

How long does a snapback take to dry?

Usually 4 to 6 hours with good airflow. Wool blends or a heavily dampened sweatband can take closer to a day.
