Cap Sauce Foam Cleaner 4 oz and wooden hat brush

To hand wash a hat, scrub it with a soft brush and a little mild cleaner in cool water, wipe or rinse it lightly depending on what it’s made of, and air dry it on a round form. Sturdy cotton and polyester caps can handle a quick sink wash. Wool, felt, straw and vintage hats should only be spot cleaned.

Cleaning a hat by hand is slower than tossing it in a machine by about five minutes. It’s also the difference between a hat that comes out clean and one that comes out a weird new shape.

The quick answer

  1. Check the care tag and figure out if your hat can handle water.
  2. Dry brush off loose dirt.
  3. Mix a few drops of mild soap into a bowl or sink of cool water, or grab a hat foam.
  4. Scrub with a soft brush in small circles, sweatband included.
  5. Wipe away the soap with a damp cloth. Only rinse lightly if it’s a water-friendly hat.
  6. Press out extra water with a towel. Never wring it.
  7. Air dry on a form, away from heat and direct sun.

First: can your hat handle water?

This decides which method you use. Here’s the short version.

Hat Method
Modern cotton or polyester cap with a plastic brim Sink or bowl method
Mesh-back trucker hat Sink method for the mesh, spot clean the foam front
Wool or wool blend Spot clean, cool water, dab don’t scrub
Felt or cowboy hat Mostly dry brushing, tiny spot cleaning
Straw Brush and a barely damp cloth
Vintage or cardboard brim Spot clean only, keep the brim dry
Suede or leather Use a suede or leather specific cleaner

Not sure about the brim? Flex it. Plastic springs back. Cardboard feels stiff and can crease. When in doubt, use the spot clean method.

What you’ll need

Method 1: The sink or bowl method (for hats that can handle water)

Step 1: Brush it dry

Brush the whole hat before it gets wet. Loose dirt turns into mud once you add water, so get it off first.

Step 2: Make your wash water

Fill a sink or bowl with cool water and mix in a small squirt of mild soap. You want a few bubbles, not a bubble bath. Too much soap is hard to get back out.

Step 3: Dip and scrub

Dip the brush in the soapy water and scrub the crown in small circles, one panel at a time. You can dunk the crown briefly for a really dirty hat, but keep the brim out of the water as much as you can and don’t leave it sitting there. A quick dip is fine. A long soak is how hats lose their shape.

Step 4: Work the sweatband

Turn the hat over and scrub the full length of the band. This is where most of the grime and smell live. Yellow lines? Our sweat stain guide has extra tricks.

Step 5: Rinse lightly

Run a little cool water over the crown, or wipe it down with a clean damp cloth, until no more suds come out. Leftover soap attracts dirt and can leave a stiff patch.

Step 6: Press out the water

Lay a dry towel over the hat and press gently. Don’t twist or wring it. That bends the brim and stretches the seams.

Method 2: The spot clean method (for hats that can’t)

This is how to clean a hat by hand when it’s wool, felt, straw, vintage, or just has a tag that says spot clean only.

  1. Dry brush the whole hat. For felt, brush counterclockwise with the nap.
  2. Put a small amount of cleaner on the brush, not the hat.
  3. Work only the dirty spots with light pressure.
  4. Blot with a clean, barely damp cloth, then with a dry one.
  5. Let it air dry before checking if it needs another round.

Drying it the right way

Set the hat on a ball or coffee can, or stuff the crown with a rolled towel, so it dries in its real shape. Put it somewhere with airflow and no heat. A cap that got the sink method usually needs 4 to 8 hours. A spot-cleaned hat can be dry in 1 to 3. Don’t put it on until it’s dry all the way through, sweatband included.

Why hand washing beats the machine

Washing machines and dishwashers both use heat, strong detergent and a lot of motion. That combo can shrink cotton and wool, warp brims, and crack foam fronts. Some polyester caps survive it, but you’re rolling the dice every time. Read more in can you wash a hat in the washing machine?

Mistakes to skip

Still dirty? Try this

If a stain survives the first wash, let the hat dry completely and go again. Two gentle rounds are better than one aggressive one. For grease, work a drop of dish soap into the spot with a toothbrush before the main wash. For a dingy white hat, clean more often and skip the bleach.

The easy way

If you’d rather skip the sink entirely, Cap Sauce Foam Cleaner cleans without water. Foam on the soft brush, scrub, wipe, done. It works for the spot clean method on wool and felt too. Just test a hidden spot first on anything delicate or vintage.

FAQ

What’s the best way to clean a hat at home?

Hand washing. Brush it dry, scrub with a soft brush and mild cleaner in cool water, wipe or lightly rinse, then air dry on a round form. It’s gentler and more controlled than any machine.

What soap should I use to hand wash a hat?

Mild dish soap, gentle laundry detergent, or a cleaner made for hats. Use a small amount and skip anything with bleach or strong solvents.

Can I soak my hat in water?

Not for long. A quick dip of the crown is okay for sturdy cotton or polyester caps. Long soaks warp brims and can ruin cardboard ones completely.

How do I properly wash a hat so it keeps its shape?

Keep the brim mostly dry, never wring the hat, and let it dry on something round that fills the crown. Heat is the other big shape-wrecker, so keep it far from dryers and sunny windows.
