Blue baseball cap before and after cleaning with Cap Sauce

To wash a white hat, brush off the dust, scrub it gently with a mild cleaner and a soft brush, give the sweatband extra time, then wipe it clean with a damp cloth and air dry it on a form out of direct sun. Skip chlorine bleach, which can actually make white hats more yellow.

White hats look great for about three wears. Then the sweat line shows up. The good news is that white is easy to clean if you stay on top of it, and even yellowed hats can usually be brought back a long way.

The quick answer

  1. Check the care tag and the brim material.
  2. Dry brush the whole hat.
  3. Scrub the crown with a small amount of mild cleaner on a soft brush.
  4. Spend most of your effort on the sweatband and any yellow lines.
  5. Wipe off all the suds with a damp white cloth.
  6. Air dry on a rolled towel indoors, with good airflow, for 4 to 8 hours.

Why white hats turn yellow

Sweat, skin oil and sunscreen soak into the sweatband and slowly oxidize. On a dark hat you’d never notice. On a white hat it turns into that yellow or brownish ring.

Leftover soap can do it too. If cleaner isn’t wiped out fully, it holds onto dirt and can dull white fabric over time. That’s why the wipe-down step matters so much here.

Why chlorine bleach makes it worse

It seems like bleach should be the answer for white stuff, but chlorine bleach can react with some synthetic fibers and with the oils already in the stain, and the result is a yellow tint. It’s also hard on cotton fibers and can eat at stitching and logos. On wool it does real damage. So on hats, we skip it entirely.

What you’ll need

How to wash a white hat, step by step

This is also how to clean a white hat that just looks a little dull. For heavy yellowing, keep reading after the steps.

1. Brush it dry

Go over the whole hat with a dry brush. White fabric shows embedded dust as a dull gray, and a lot of it lifts out before you add anything wet.

2. Scrub the crown lightly

Put the cleaner on the brush and work one panel at a time in small circles. Use light pressure. Overscrubbing makes white fabric look fuzzy, which reads as dingy even when it’s clean.

3. Hit the sweatband hard

Fold out the band and scrub its full length. This is the part of the hat that controls whether it looks white or yellow. Do two passes if the brush comes up gray after the first. Then work the stain line on the outside, a little gentler.

4. Wipe thoroughly

Wipe with a damp white cloth, rinse it, and wipe again. Keep going until no more suds come up. On a white hat, leftover soap shows up later as a dull patch.

5. Dry it indoors on a form

Put the hat on a rolled towel so the crown holds its shape. Let it dry inside with airflow, out of direct sun. It’s tempting to sun-dry a white hat, but sunlight can yellow some synthetic fabrics and fade any colored logos.

How to clean a white hat with yellow stains

If the regular clean didn’t get the yellow out, you’ve got a few options. Try them in this order.

Do another round first

Repeat the cleaning on just the band and stain line, and let the cleaner sit 2 to 3 minutes before brushing. Two or three gentle rounds often clear stains that one round only lightened.

Try an oxygen-based cleaner (with a spot test)

Oxygen-based cleaners, the kind sold as color-safe or oxygen bleach, are much gentler than chlorine and can lift yellowing. Mix a small amount with cool water according to the label. Then test it on a hidden spot, like the inside of the band near the tag, and let it dry before you judge.

If the test spot looks fine, apply it to the stained area with a brush, wait about 10 minutes, then wipe it out completely with a damp cloth. Don’t soak the hat in it. Skip this step on wool, and on vintage hats with cardboard brims.

How to clean a white baseball hat without the washer

Throwing a white cap in with a load of whites sounds smart, but the spin cycle can bend the brim, and anything colored in the load can tint it. Hand cleaning is gentler and does a better job on the sweatband. If you want the honest take on machines, read can you wash a hat in the washing machine. FAQ

Can you bleach a white hat?

We don’t recommend chlorine bleach. It can yellow some fabrics and weaken fibers and stitching. An oxygen-based cleaner is gentler, but spot test it first.

How do you get a white hat white again?

Clean the sweatband thoroughly, repeat on stubborn stains, and wipe out all the cleaner. For older yellowing, a spot-tested oxygen-based cleaner can help.

Why did my white hat turn yellow after washing?

Usually it’s leftover soap, sweat oils that weren’t fully removed, chlorine bleach, or drying in the sun. Rewash gently and wipe it out well.

Can I put a white hat in the washing machine with my whites?

Some polyester caps survive it in a cap cage on cold and gentle, but it’s risky for the brim. Hand washing is safer and cleans the band better.
