To reshape a hat, lightly dampen or steam the misshapen area, push it back into shape with your hands, then let it dry fully on a form like a ball, rolled towel or coffee can. For a brim, curve or flatten it while it’s slightly warm and damp, then hold it in place until it cools and dries.
Most crushed caps come back with a little moisture and a few hours on a form. The trick is going easy with the heat. Too much can warp the brim, melt foam fronts or shrink the hat.
The quick answer
- Figure out what’s wrong: crushed crown, dented front, or a bent or flat brim.
- Lightly mist the area with cool water, or hold it a few inches from a steamer for a few seconds.
- Push the crown back out from the inside with your hand, and smooth out creases.
- Stuff the crown with a form that matches your head shape.
- Shape the brim with your hands, and clip or band it to hold the curve if needed.
- Let it dry fully, 6 to 24 hours, away from heat and direct sun.
What you’ll need
- A spray bottle with cool water, or a handheld clothes steamer
- A form for the crown: a ball (a volleyball or soccer ball works for many caps), a rolled towel, or a coffee can
- A large mug, or a rubber band or two, for curving a brim
- A couple of heavy books, for flattening a brim
- A clean towel
Which fix for which problem
| Problem | Fix | Dry time |
|---|---|---|
| Crushed or caved-in crown | Light mist or steam, push out, stuff with a form | 6 to 12 hours |
| Dented front panel | Steam from inside, push out, form inside | 6 to 12 hours |
| Brim bent the wrong way | Light steam, bend back, hold with a mug or band | 12 to 24 hours |
| Brim too flat (want a curve) | Light steam, curve it, band it or wedge it in a mug | 12 to 24 hours |
| Brim too curved (want it flat) | Light steam, press between towels under books | 12 to 24 hours |
How to reshape a hat crown
1. Add a little moisture
Mist the crushed area lightly with cool water, or steam it from a few inches away for 5 to 10 seconds. You want the fabric slightly damp and flexible, not wet. Steam from the inside if you can, so you’re not blasting the logo.
2. Push it out by hand
Put your hand inside the crown and push the dent back out. Smooth any creases with your fingers. Work the front panels carefully, since that’s where the shape shows most.
3. Put it on a form
Stuff the crown with a form that fills it snugly without stretching it. A rolled towel is easy to adjust. A ball gives a nice round shape. Make sure the front panels sit tall and even.
4. Let it dry completely
Leave it alone for at least 6 hours, overnight if possible. Keep it away from heaters and sunny windows. Pulling it off the form early is the most common reason a dent comes back.
How to fix a bent or flattened brim
Most modern caps have a plastic brim insert, which takes shape well with a little warmth. Older caps may have cardboard inside the brim. Don’t soak or steam those heavily. Use only a light mist and gentle bending, or the cardboard can go soft and lumpy.
To curve a brim
- Steam both sides of the brim for a few seconds, or mist it lightly.
- Bend it gently into the curve you want with both hands.
- Wedge it inside a large mug, or wrap a rubber band around it, to hold the curve.
- Leave it 12 to 24 hours.
To flatten a brim
- Steam or mist it lightly.
- Lay the brim flat between two towels.
- Set a couple of heavy books on top, keeping the crown off the edge so it doesn’t crush.
- Leave it overnight.
If the brim also has dirt or a sweat ring, clean it first, then reshape while it’s still slightly damp. See how to clean a hat brim.
Using steam safely
- Keep the steamer a few inches away and move it constantly.
- Use short bursts of 5 to 10 seconds, then check.
- Don’t use a clothes iron directly on a cap. It can scorch fabric and melt plastic.
- Go extra easy on foam trucker fronts. Heat can make the foam crack or peel. More in how to clean a trucker hat.
- No hair dryer on high heat and no clothes dryer. They warp and shrink.
A note on felt hats
Felt cowboy hats and fedoras can be steamed and reshaped by hand, but it’s a skill. A small dent can be steamed briefly and pushed out with your fingers. For a crushed crown, a brim that’s lost its shape, or a hat that’s been rained on and warped, take it to a hatter. They have blocks and tools made for this, and a mistake on a good felt hat costs a lot more than the shop visit.
Still misshapen? Try this
The dent keeps coming back. It probably came off the form too soon. Do it again and leave it a full day.
The front panels are soft and floppy. The structured backing may be worn out. Storing it on a form helps it hold up better, but a very floppy front won’t go back to new.
The brim insert is cracked. Reshaping won’t fix a broken insert. You can wear it as is or retire it.
Keep it from happening again
Most crushed hats get that way in storage. Don’t stack heavy things on them, and don’t toss them loose in a bag. Our guide on how to store hats covers racks, boxes and packing for travel.
The easy way
Reshaping is a great time to clean, since the hat is already damp and on a form. The Hat Care Kit’s foam cleaner and soft brush let you freshen it up without soaking it, so you’re not fighting a waterlogged brim.
FAQ
How do you fix a crushed baseball cap?
Lightly mist or steam the dent, push it out from the inside, and let it dry on a form like a ball or rolled towel for at least 6 hours.
Can you reshape a hat with hot water?
Skip hot water. It can shrink the hat and warp the brim. Cool water mist or a few seconds of steam is enough.
How do you unbend a hat brim?
Steam it lightly, bend it back by hand, and hold it in shape with a mug or between books for 12 to 24 hours.
Can you reshape a felt hat at home?
Small dents, yes, with brief steam and your fingers. For anything bigger, a hatter is the safer call.
