Cap Sauce Hat Care Kit box, front

The best way to store hats is clean, fully dry, and supported so the crown keeps its shape, out of direct sunlight and away from dust. For caps, that means a hook or rack, a shelf, or a box with nothing heavy on top. Fitteds can be stacked a few high if you nest them carefully.

Bad storage ruins more hats than wearing them does. Crushed crowns, faded fronts and musty smell all come from how a hat sits when you’re not wearing it. A little setup fixes most of that.

The quick answer

  1. Clean the hat and let it dry completely before you put it away.
  2. Keep it out of direct sun to stop fading.
  3. Support the crown: a hook, rack, shelf or form.
  4. Keep heavy stuff off the top.
  5. Stack fitteds and snapbacks by nesting them, a few at a time.
  6. Use a box or closed shelf for hats you don’t wear often.
  7. Check stored hats every few months for dust and smell.

Before you store: clean and dry

Never put away a sweaty or damp hat. Trapped moisture leads to musty smell and can set stains. Wipe the sweatband after wearing, and give it a real clean before long-term storage. Our guide on cleaning a hat sweatband covers that part.

Let it dry on a form for a full day. It should feel completely dry inside the band before it goes anywhere.

How to store hats: options compared

Open shelf Caps and fitteds, stacked or in a row Dust; rotate or cover them
Hat boxes or clear bins Long-term storage, special hats Packing them in too tight
Over-the-door organizers Small spaces Pockets that squash the crown

Hooks and racks

Hooks are fine for hats you wear a lot. Hang them by the back strap or the opening so the crown isn’t resting on a point. A rail with clips that grab the brim keeps the crown untouched, which is nice for structured caps.

Shelves

A shelf lets the hat sit naturally on its crown and brim. Line them up side by side, or nest them. Leave some breathing room so you’re not mashing crowns together.

Boxes and bins

For hats you’re not wearing this season, a box or clear bin keeps dust and light out. Stuff each crown loosely with acid-free tissue paper so it holds its shape. Don’t seal a hat in plastic while it’s even a little damp.

Stacking fitteds and snapbacks

Nesting is the classic way to store a lot of caps. Set one hat down, then slide the next one over it so the crowns and brims line up. The hats support each other.

Stop fading and dust

Sunlight is the biggest enemy of color. A hat sitting near a window for a summer can come out with a faded crown and a darker underside of the brim. Keep displays on walls that don’t get direct sun, or use UV-filtering covers if you have a bright room.

Dust settles on top of the crown and brim. Give displayed hats a soft brush every few weeks. A quick dry brush is easier than cleaning caked-in dust later.

Dark hats show both fading and dust fast. If yours are already looking dull, see how to clean a black hat.

The easy way

Hats store best when they go away clean and protected. The Complete Kit lets you clean the hat, deodorize the band once it’s dry, and finish with protector spray to help repel dust and moisture while it sits on the shelf.

FAQ

What is the best way to store baseball caps?

On a shelf, rack or hook where the crown is supported, out of direct sun. Nest them in small stacks if you’re short on space.

Is it OK to stack hats?

Yes, if you nest them so the crowns line up and keep stacks to around 5 to 10. Very tall stacks press down on the bottom hats.

How do you store hats without ruining them?

Store them clean and dry, support the crown, keep them out of sunlight and heat, and don’t put weight on top.

Should you store hats in plastic bags?

Not for long periods. Plastic traps moisture. A box or breathable cloth bag is better.
