Blue baseball cap before and after cleaning with Cap Sauce

To clean a hat sweatband, fold the band out, scrub it with a mild cleaner on a soft brush, wipe away the suds with a damp cloth, and air dry the hat on a form. Leather sweatbands are different: wipe them with a barely damp cloth and use a leather cleaner instead of soap and scrubbing.

The sweatband is where almost all the grime lives. Sweat, skin oil, sunscreen and hair product all end up there. Clean the band and the hat usually looks and smells a lot better, even if you never touch the rest of it.

The quick answer

  1. Check what the band is made of: fabric (cotton, polyester, terry) or leather.
  2. Fold the sweatband out so the whole inside surface is exposed.
  3. Dry brush it to knock loose flakes and dust.
  4. For fabric: scrub with a little mild cleaner on a soft brush. For leather: wipe gently with a barely damp cloth.
  5. Wipe off all the cleaner with a clean damp cloth.
  6. Air dry with the band folded out, on a rolled towel, for 4 to 8 hours.
  7. Deodorize once it’s fully dry if it still smells.

Fabric or leather? Figure that out first

Most baseball caps, snapbacks and fitteds have a fabric sweatband. It’s usually cotton, polyester or a terry-style knit. These handle a cleaner and a brush just fine.

Felt cowboy hats, fedoras and some older caps use a leather sweatband. Leather doesn’t like soap and soaking. Too much water can make it stiff, darken it, or shrink it so the hat fits tighter.

Sweatband type Found on How to clean it
Cotton or polyester Most caps, snapbacks, dad hats Mild cleaner, soft brush, damp cloth wipe
Moisture-wicking synthetic Golf and running hats Same as above, a little more water is OK
Terry cloth Some sports and visors Cleaner and brush, wipe well so soap doesn’t stay in the loops
Leather Felt hats, fedoras, some vintage caps Barely damp cloth, leather cleaner, no scrubbing

What you’ll need

How to clean a fabric hat sweatband, step by step

1. Fold it out and brush it dry

Flip the band outward so it lies flat against the inside of the crown. Brush the whole thing dry first. Dried salt and skin flakes come right off, and that means less mud once you add cleaner.

2. Scrub with a small amount of cleaner

Put a little cleaner on the brush, about the size of a quarter for the whole band. Scrub in short back-and-forth strokes. The band is tougher than the crown fabric, so medium pressure is fine. Spend extra time on the front, since that’s where your forehead sits.

3. Hit the seam and stitching

Gunk builds up along the stitch line where the band meets the crown. Angle the brush and work along that seam. A toothbrush is handy here.

4. Wipe it clean

Wipe away the suds with a damp cloth. Rinse the cloth in cool water and go again. Do this until the cloth stops picking up soap. Leftover cleaner attracts dirt and can feel stiff when dry.

5. Dry it folded out

Leave the band flipped out and set the hat on a rolled towel. Air dry somewhere with good airflow, away from heaters and direct sun. Most fabric bands are dry in 4 to 8 hours. Fold the band back in only when it’s completely dry.

How to clean a leather sweatband

Go slow and use as little moisture as you can.

  1. Wipe the band with a cloth that’s barely damp. Wring it out until it feels almost dry.
  2. For buildup, use a leather cleaner made for that job. Test it on a small hidden section first.
  3. Pat it dry with a clean cloth.
  4. Let it air dry with the band folded out. No hair dryer, no sun.
  5. Once dry, a light leather conditioner can keep it from cracking.

If the leather band is cracked, torn or badly shrunk, a hat shop can replace it. On a felt hat that’s often worth it. More on that in how to clean a felt cowboy hat.

Removing heavy buildup

Some bands get a dark, almost waxy layer. That’s mostly skin oil mixed with dirt and product. It takes a few passes.

If you also see yellow lines creeping up the outside of the crown, our guide on sweat stains covers that.

Getting the smell out of a sweatband

The band is where the smell comes from. Bacteria feed on sweat and oil trapped in the fabric. Cleaning removes most of it. After the band is completely dry, mist it lightly with a fabric deodorizer.

If the smell comes back fast, the band probably wasn’t fully cleaned, or the hat is being stored damp. Let it dry out on a form after every sweaty wear.

Don’t do this

How often to clean the sweatband

In summer or if you work out in your hat, give the band a quick clean every week or two. Otherwise once a month is plenty. A damp cloth wipe after a hot day helps a lot between cleanings.

The easy way

The Complete Kit is built around the sweatband. The foam cleaner works on fabric bands without soaking the hat, the deodorizer handles the smell after it’s dry, and the protector spray helps keep sweat from sinking in as deep next time.

FAQ

Can you remove a hat sweatband to clean it?

On most caps the sweatband is sewn in, so don’t cut it out. Just fold it outward and clean it in place.

How do you clean a smelly hat sweatband?

Scrub it with a mild cleaner and soft brush, wipe it clean, and dry it fully. Then use a fabric deodorizer on the dry band. Cleaning does most of the work.

Can I use dish soap on a hat sweatband?

Yes, on fabric bands. A few drops in a cup of cool water is enough. Wipe out all the soap afterward. Don’t use it on leather.

How long does a sweatband take to dry?

Usually 4 to 8 hours with the band folded out and good airflow. Thick terry bands can take longer.
