To get makeup off a hat, blot or brush off as much as you can, then work a drop of gentle dish soap or a little micellar water into the stain with a soft brush, and wipe it out with a damp cloth. Repeat until the cloth comes away clean, then air dry the hat on a form.
Foundation on the sweatband is one of the most common hat stains out there. It’s mostly oil and pigment, which is why plain water barely touches it. The fix is breaking up the oil first, then lifting it out.
The quick answer
- Brush off any powder while the hat is dry.
- Blot any fresh liquid makeup with a dry cloth. Don’t rub.
- Apply a drop of dish soap or a dab of micellar water to the stain.
- Work it in with a soft brush in small circles for 30 to 60 seconds.
- Wipe with a damp cloth, rinsing the cloth between passes.
- Repeat if needed, then air dry on a form for 4 to 8 hours.
Why makeup is tricky on a hat
Foundation, concealer, tinted sunscreen and bronzer are made to cling to skin and last all day. On a fabric sweatband, they cling just as well. Rubbing a fresh smear pushes the pigment deeper and spreads it wider. So the first job is lifting, not scrubbing.
What you’ll need
- A dry cloth or paper towel for blotting
- Gentle dish soap, or micellar water
- A soft-bristle brush or soft toothbrush
- Two microfiber cloths
- Cool water
- A rolled towel or ball for drying
Which method for which makeup
| Makeup | Start with | Tip |
|---|---|---|
| Powder foundation, bronzer, blush | Dry brush | Most of it comes off before you add any liquid |
| Liquid or cream foundation | Blot, then dish soap | Dish soap cuts the oil base |
| Long-wear or waterproof foundation | Micellar water, then dish soap | Give it two or three rounds |
| Mascara or eyeliner | Micellar water on a cotton swab | Dab, don’t rub, so it doesn’t smear |
| Lipstick | Dish soap | Scrape off any chunk first with a dull edge |
How to get makeup off a hat, step by step
1. Remove what’s on the surface
If it’s powder, brush it while dry. If it’s a fresh liquid smear, press a dry cloth onto it and lift straight up. Use a clean part of the cloth each time.
2. Break up the oil
Put one drop of dish soap directly on the stain, or mix a few drops into a cup of cool water and dip your brush. For long-wear or waterproof makeup, dab a little micellar water on first and let it sit a minute.
3. Brush gently
Work it in with small circles. Use light pressure on the crown fabric, a bit more on the sweatband. Work from the outer edge of the stain toward the middle so you don’t spread it.
4. Wipe and check
Wipe with a damp cloth. Rinse the cloth and wipe again until no suds or color come up. Check it in good light. Damp fabric looks darker, so a faint shadow might disappear once dry.
5. Repeat if needed
Old foundation buildup often takes a few rounds. Let the soap sit 2 to 3 minutes on the second pass before brushing.
6. Air dry
Fold the sweatband out, stuff the crown with a rolled towel, and let it dry 4 to 8 hours away from heat and direct sun.
Makeup on the sweatband vs inside the crown
The sweatband takes most of it, since that’s what touches your forehead. It’s sturdy and easy to scrub. Our full guide on how to clean a hat sweatband has more on that.
Makeup on the inside of the crown usually comes from pulling the hat on and off. That fabric is thinner and often has a printed label or taping on the seams. Use less water and lighter pressure there.
Still stained? Try this
A faint tan shadow stays. Try micellar water on a cloth, pressed and lifted a few times, then a final dish soap round.
It’s a white hat. Makeup shows a lot on white. Skip chlorine bleach. See how to wash a white hat for safer options.
It’s mixed with sweat. Makeup and sweat together make a stubborn yellow-brown line. Treat it like a sweat stain. Our sweat stain guide covers it.
It’s a wool hat. Use cool water and dab instead of scrubbing. More in how to clean a wool hat.
Don’t do this
- Rubbing a fresh smear. It pushes pigment deeper and spreads the stain.
- Makeup wipes. Many contain oils that can leave a greasy ring on fabric.
- Nail polish remover or acetone. It can damage synthetic fabrics and strip dye.
- Hot water. It can set the stain and shrink the hat.
- Soaking the whole hat. One small stain doesn’t need it, and it risks the brim.
Keep makeup off your hats
- Let foundation set for a few minutes before putting on a hat.
- Set it with powder if you’ll be wearing a cap all day.
- Wipe the band with a damp cloth after wearing, before it builds up.
- A fabric protector spray on a clean, dry hat helps stains sit on top instead of soaking in.
The easy way
The Hat Care Kit’s foam cleaner is made for spot jobs like this. It lifts makeup off the band with a soft brush and no water needed, so you’re not soaking the hat for one stain.
FAQ
How do you get foundation off a hat brim or band?
Blot or brush off the excess, then work in a drop of dish soap with a soft brush and wipe clean with a damp cloth. Repeat until it’s gone.
Does micellar water remove makeup from fabric?
It often helps, especially with long-wear makeup. Test it on a hidden spot first, and follow with a damp cloth wipe.
Can you use rubbing alcohol on makeup stains on a hat?
It can help with stubborn foundation, but it can also pull dye. Test a hidden spot and dab, don’t soak.
How do you get makeup out of a white hat?
Use the same blot and dish soap method, with extra rounds if needed. Avoid chlorine bleach, which can yellow white fabric.
