To clean a fitted hat, brush it dry, spot clean it with a mild cleaner on a soft brush, wipe the suds off with a damp cloth, and let it air dry on a round form. Keep it away from hot water and heat the whole time, because a fitted has no strap to save you if it shrinks.
That last part is the whole game. A snapback that shrinks a little just gets let out a notch. A fitted that shrinks a quarter size is now your little cousin’s hat.
The quick answer
- Check the care tag inside the cap and figure out what the brim is made of.
- Dry brush the whole hat to knock off dust.
- Put a small amount of cleaner on a soft brush and scrub the crown in small circles.
- Spend extra time on the sweatband.
- Wipe off the suds with a damp cloth. No rinsing under the faucet.
- Dry it on something that fills the crown, like a rolled towel or a ball, away from heat and sun.
Why fitted hats shrink (and how to keep a fitted from shrinking)
Most fitteds are made from wool, a wool blend, cotton or polyester. Wool and cotton shrink when they get hot and wet at the same time, and wool also tightens up when it’s rubbed hard while wet. Polyester is more forgiving, but the sweatband and the stitching can still pull in.
So the rules for keeping your size are simple:
- Cool water only. Not warm, not “just a little hot.” Cool.
- As little water as possible. Damp, never soaked.
- Dab and brush, don’t grind. Hard scrubbing on wet wool is how felting starts.
- Dry it on a form. A filled crown dries at its real size. An empty one can pull in as it dries.
- Zero heat. No dryer, no hair dryer, no dashboard, no sunny windowsill.
If you only remember one thing, make it the heat rule. Most “my fitted shrank” stories involve a dryer or a dishwasher. We explain the dishwasher problem in detail in can you wash a hat in the dishwasher?
What you’ll need
- A soft-bristle brush (a clean old toothbrush works for tight spots around the logo)
- A gentle cleaner: a hat foam, or a few drops of mild dish soap in a bowl of cool water
- A microfiber cloth or clean towel
- A drying form: a rolled towel, a ball close to your hat size, a coffee can, or a hat form
How to clean a fitted hat, step by step
Step 1: Check the tag and the brim
Look for a care tag along the inside back seam. If it says spot clean only, follow it. Then flex the brim gently. Modern fitteds almost always have a plastic brim insert that handles light moisture. Older and vintage fitteds can have cardboard, which warps if it gets wet. If you have a vintage one, read our vintage hat guide first.
Step 2: Dry brush
Brush the whole hat while it’s dry, top button down to the brim. On wool, brush in one direction so you don’t rough up the fibers. You’ll pull off a lot of dust before you’ve used any cleaner.
Step 3: Spot clean the crown
Put the cleaner on the brush, not the hat. A pea-sized amount of foam or a brush dipped in soapy water and tapped off is plenty for one panel. Work in small circles with light pressure, one panel at a time.
Around embroidery, slow down and use less pressure. Raised logos fuzz up if you scrub across them hard.
Step 4: Clean the sweatband
Flip it over. The sweatband on a fitted sits tight against your head all day, so it collects more sweat and oil than the band on most adjustable caps. Scrub along the full length of the band, then wipe. If you’re seeing yellow or white salt lines, our guide on sweat stains in hats has the extra steps.
Step 5: Wipe it down
Use a damp cloth to lift the suds. Wipe each panel two or three times until the cloth stops picking up foam. Wring the cloth out well first. You want it damp, not dripping onto the hat.
Step 6: Dry it at full size
Fill the crown with a rolled towel or set it over a ball or coffee can so it holds its true shape. Let it air dry indoors with some airflow. A polyester fitted can be dry in 2 to 4 hours. Wool usually needs 6 to 12. Don’t wear it until it’s completely dry, inside and out.
What to do with the fitted hat sticker
Lots of people keep the size sticker on the brim. If that’s you, clean around it. Wipe the brim with a barely damp cloth and steer clear of the sticker itself. Foam and water can lift the edges, and scrubbing can rub off the print.
If a sticker is already peeling, let the brim dry fully before you press it back down. Don’t add glue while the brim is still damp.
Which method for which fitted
| Your fitted | Best method | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Wool or wool blend | Dry brush, then foam or cool soapy water, dab more than scrub | Shrinking and felting from heat or hard rubbing |
| Polyester | Foam or mild soap on a brush, damp cloth wipe | Warped brim if soaked |
| Cotton | Foam or mild soap, light pressure | Shrinking with warm water, fading in the sun |
| Vintage, cardboard brim | Dry brush and spot clean only, keep the brim dry | Soggy brim that never recovers |
Mistakes that shrink or wreck a fitted
- Washing machine or dishwasher. Hot water plus tumbling is the exact recipe for shrinking.
- Drying it flat or upside down. The crown dries collapsed and can tighten up.
- Speeding it up with a hair dryer. It’s the same heat problem, just aimed right at the hat.
- Bleach. It can yellow white fabric and it’s rough on wool. Got a white fitted? See how to wash a white hat.
- Wearing it wet. The idea that a damp fitted will “mold to your head” mostly just gets you an odd-shaped hat.
Still dirty after one round?
Let it dry completely, then do a second pass. Dry fabric shows you what’s actually left, and two light cleans are much safer than one heavy soak. For a dirty brim, scrub with the brush in short strokes along the length of the bill. If the stain still won’t budge, our brim cleaning guide covers tougher spots.
How often to clean a fitted hat
If you wear it a few times a week, wipe down the sweatband every couple of weeks. Do a full clean when the crown starts looking dull or the band starts smelling. Small, regular cleans mean you never need the big scary one.
The easy way
Cap Sauce Foam Cleaner doesn’t need water, which is exactly what you want on a hat with no strap to adjust. Foam on the brush, scrub, wipe, dry on a form. The Complete Kit adds a deodorizer for the sweatband and a protector spray that helps repel dirt and moisture before the next game.
FAQ
Can you wash a fitted hat without it shrinking?
Yes. Use cool water, keep the hat damp instead of wet, and air dry it on a form that fills the crown. Heat is what shrinks fitteds, so skip the dryer, dishwasher and hair dryer completely.
How do you wash a fitted hat by hand?
Dry brush it, scrub it in small circles with a soft brush and a little mild cleaner, clean the sweatband, then wipe away the suds with a damp cloth. Air dry it on a rolled towel or ball for a few hours.
Can you stretch a fitted hat that shrank?
Sometimes a little. Lightly dampen the sweatband with cool water and let it dry on a form that’s slightly bigger than your hat. Go slow, because over-stretching can pull seams.
Should I take the sticker off my fitted before cleaning?
You don’t have to. Just clean around it and keep the brim only lightly damp so the sticker doesn’t peel or smear.
